Chapter Seven

A noise in the kitchen brought Layla out of her restful sleep. Rubbing her hands over her eyes, she looked over at the man lying next to her.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” she leaned over and kissed him.

“Mmm,” he replied, turning over to meet her eyes. She almost jumped in shock. The man on her bed wasn’t Treyton — it was Darren. She must have been dreaming of Treyton; there was no other explanation for it. Layla knew she had invited Darren last night and had a wonderful time with him. So, why was Treyton on her mind? She didn’t want to think about him at all.

“Would you like some breakfast?” she asked Darren, pushing Treyton out of her head.

“I’m starved,” he said. “We didn’t eat dinner last night.”

“I know,” she answered. “I meant to cook, but we kinda got caught up.”

Darren uttered, “I’m not complaining.”

Layla hopped out of bed and ran inside the bathroom to grab her bathrobe off the hanger behind the door. “Here,” she handed Darren a comfy white robe, “In case you didn’t want to get dressed yet.”

“Thanks.”

“I’m going to see what we have in the kitchen.” Layla left him in the room alone.

“Good morning,” Tonya greeted her. “I made breakfast if you and your friend are hungry.”

Layla noticed that the kitchen table was set for three. It was a full spread of pancakes, eggs, bacon, fresh fruits, and orange juice. “How did you know that someone else was here?” she asked.

“I saw the extra set of keys on the coffee table and the jacket on the couch. ‘Looks like you took my advice and had some fun for once. You have to tell me all about it later,” Tonya said, winking.

Darren came out of the room then. “Hello,” he said nervously.

Layla introduced him to her friend. “Oh, Darren, this is my roommate Tonya. She made breakfast.”

“Yes, please join us.” Tonya grabbed a piece of bacon and took a bite.

Darren and Layla sat down next to each other. Since the man was wearing her robe, he pulled it closer around him when he sat down to avoid giving a show to the whole table.

“Thanks for cooking breakfast. It looks delicious,” Darren articulated.

“You’re very welcome,” Tonya replied.

Layla asked. “Where’s the coffee?”

“There’s a fresh pot in the kitchen,” Tonya told her.

Everyone made their plates and enjoyed their morning. Layla poured herself a big mug of coffee. “Mmm.” She sighed as warm liquid caffeine ran down her throat. It was a part of her morning routine, and no amount of orange juice would change that.

“So, Darren?” Tonya asked. “Will you go with Layla to the gala?”

“Oh,” he said, wiping his face with his napkin and setting it back on his lap. “I didn’t even know there was an invitation. What’s the date?” he asked.

“Well, you’re being invited now,” Tonya responded, taking control of the conversation.

“The gala is on the 7th at 8 P.M.,” Layla uttered.

“I have an event on the campus I’m hosting that night. I won’t be able to go, sorry,” Darren said.
